My name is Samantha and I believe I have the best job in the world. I run a daycare and home boarding service in the beautiful Scottish Highlands. I have the absolute pleasure of caring for many dogs and have met some amazing humans through my work too! Within my daycare, I also help dogs who have problems socially to cope with being around other dogs and generally build their confidence. I do pack walks where I incorporate breed fulfillment, I have the labs learn to retrieve and the spaniels go find planted decoys. I also practice generally safety procedures like recall and emergency stops.
I offer training as part of my business but I love everything about my daycare and home boarding. The last few years have been tough for so many, I lost mum and dad then my cousin who was also my closest friend and my 18.5 year old mix breed Holly. On a brighter note, my hubby James and I finally tied the knot and built our house. We called it Holly’s view, after my old girl. Blood, sweat and tears, that was but I feel I can now offer an even higher standard of service than before we built our own house. We are so blessed.
My children are very involved with my business. Maddy is 15 and Isla is 9 and are both little grafters and brilliant with our dogs and clients.

I have been featured in newspapers several times include a large article for my dog charity donations. Every year around Christmas Mizz Pawz does a charity collection for 1 local dog rescue centre and 1 local cat rescue centre. I am always amazed just how much we can collect to help all the homeless animals.

I also offer freelance training work and at present, I am contracted by Pawtropolis dog daycare Centre in Cumbernauld to design and run their in-depth bespoke training classes and offer 1-2-1 training and behaviour. I started up the business after seeing “professional” dog walkers walking as many as 12 dogs at the one time. I wanted to do it as responsibly as possible and only walk very small groups. I have slowly been building the business, taking the time to get to know each dog before taking on another. I also offer 1:1 walks for more reactive dogs. As well as dog walking I run a pet taxi service to take animals to vet/ grooming appointments, “Pop In” home visits for puppies, elderly pets, cats, rabbits etc. I also do small animal home boarding ( you need a category for this). Both of us were brought up surrounded by lots of different pets,  Dogs, Cats, Rabbits, Guinea pigs, Pigeons/Exotic birds and even a Shetland Pony named Nugget. My dad was also locally renowned for giving unwanted dogs a new home and a fresh start in life, whatever the size!!

So, as you can see, various types of pets surrounding us from childhood right up until when we flew the nest to start our own adult lives. But as we both grew, we still found love and compassion in being surrounded by our furry best friends. Currently, we are the proud owners of 2 dogs and 3 cats which in itself can be a handful. After leading hectic lives and building with an aim to the future, we have decided to chase our ultimate dream of building a business offering a family orientated pet service, caring for dogs, cats and other small animals. We both understand how necessary and important it is to make sure that your pet is integrated, with the correct training and socialisation, whilst still allowing them to be themselves and do what they do naturally.

Paws and Relax Pet Services offer a number of services, ranging from Online Training Consultations, Dog Walks, Doggie Day Hikes right through to a Long-Haul Pet Taxi Service

Building Paws and Relax Pet Services is based on knowing that there are people out there that can’t always get home to walk their dog at lunchtime.  That some people do need to make that business trip but have a pet who needs to be cared for in their absence.  Or someone who ultimately wants to know how to train their dog to show a wanted behaviour when the owner asks for it.

We are a rescue that covers all of Scotland. We rescue, rehabilitate, treat medical issues and eventually rehome the guinea pigs that come into our care. We usually have between 40 and 70 in our care at any one time but over lockdown we had nearly 100 wee souls. We are run by volunteers of all ages and abilities and welcome visitors to our centre anytime to see what we do and meet some of these wonderful girls and boys that are in our care.
To just be nominated for this means the world to us as the main volunteers work so hard caring for each and every one of them, giving up any spare time they have. Even in the evenings when people are sitting down relaxing, they are hard at it either caring for the sick or making things to sell to help raise funds.
It can be so hard emotionally at the centre as you sadly see so many sick guinea pigs, some with problems that, if treated earlier, could so easily have been sorted but then its joyous too, when you finally see most of them off to their new homes.
We stay in touch with families and are always there to help as much as we can, through the good and the bad.
It can be so hard at times but when you see those eyes light up and hear them wheek from happiness, you know it’s all worthwhile.

I’m Karen and I’m the founder and Head Training and Behaviour Consultant at The Dogworks. I’ve worked with dogs for over 10 years and began my career in Spain where I became involved in animal welfare. I volunteered in rescue kennels, fostered dozens of dogs and puppies, and assessed and trained dogs for adoption and rehoming, and was lucky enough to be selected to attend The Dog’s Trust International Training Programme in London in 2013.  I came back to Scotland at the beginning of 2015 and set up The Dogworks in Kilwinning, North Ayrshire. My passion is in helping people develop a deeper, more meaningful relationships with their dogs through training.

I now have a really successful dog training business with training classes for puppies and adult dogs, private one-to-one training where people need some help with specific issues, and more bespoke behavioural support for different issues that need a much more in-depth program of behaviour modification for example anxieties and phobias, dogs with fear-based problems, and rescue dogs that have had difficult or abusive backgrounds.

I truly love my job and I believe that dogs will give more when they’re enjoying learning. I only use positive reinforcement or reward based training methods and my objective is to provide a professional and supportive environment for people and their dogs to thrive as a team. I also teach and mentor budding new trainers how to conduct classes and training support to clients and support them as they build and set up themselves in the business; something which I felt was sadly lacking when I was beginning my career.

I also provide volunteering positions for the local community to give back a little bit wherever I can. Dogs can be great therapy and I’ve helped build confidence and provided opportunities wherever I can in people who have additional support needs to feel included and get back into the workplace.

About Suzanne
Suzanne Gould is a lifelong dog lover living in Edinburgh, she is the founder of Edinburgh Holistic Dogs, providing tailor made dog training as well as adventure filled dog walks. Originally from North Yorkshire Suzanne 37, is a former Ladies Knitwear Designer having worked for Edinburgh Woolen Mill and most recently Ness Clothing. Having been made redundant when Ness was sold Suzanne took this as an opportunity to pursue a career working with dogs.

Inspired by her own Old English Sheepdog Flash, who she adopted aged 1 he required lots of dog training to help him overcome behaviour issues. This set Suzanne on a path to learn more about dogs, dog training and behaviour turning her hobby into a passion and business.

SGS isn’t a centre as such. We don’t have somewhere the public can visit dogs in kennels. That’s because all of our homeless dogs spend time in foster homes for a period of assessment and basic training. We like to get to know our dogs and what type of home they need. Then we can match them with the right forever home! All of this takes enormous time and effort. SGS is completely run by volunteers, from trustees to transporters, rehoming coordinators to home checkers. Each and every one plays a vital role in the work we do.

SGS, as the name suggests, takes in and rehomes greyhounds in need. Mostly it’s ex racing greyhounds, but quite often lurchers too. So we are a sighthound specific charity.
